Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Formerly Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor. Before the 1971-72 National Basketball Association season, he converted from Catholicism to Islam and took the name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He played 20 seasons in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers. By the time the 7-foot-2 basketball player retired in 1989, Abdul-Jabbar was a six-time Most Valuable Player and is now one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History.



Muhammad Ali
Formerly Cassius Clay, he was the three-time Heavy Weight Champion of the World. He was convinced by activist Malcom X to convert to Islam, and did so after winning a famous fight against Sonny Liston in 1965. In 1967, Ali, citing religious beliefs, refused to participate in the Vietnam War. He was arrested and his boxing license was revoked, leading to a three-year absence from the sport. Ali was diagnosed, in 1981, with Parkinson's disorder and now raises money for the Muhammad Ali Foundation.




Yusuf Islam
Formerly Cat Stevens, he is a world famous 1960s British pop singer. Born an orthodox Jew, he attended Catholic school in London's West Side. He converted to Islam in 1973 and changed his name to Yusuf Islam after spending time in the hospital with tuberculosis. He left the pop music scene shortly after.
